How Seniors Can Reduce Their Auto Insurance Premiums

Elderly DriverFor senior citizens, auto insurance premiums tend to increase after age 70, though the exact age varies depending on the insurance company. The reason for the premium increase is that age-related ailments, such as arthritis and cognitive decline, tend to diminish a person's ability to drive. However, there are a number of measures that seniors can take to get a rate reduction.

Pass An Approved Driving Class

In 34 states, insurance companies offer discounts if you take and pass a state approved driving class. Rules of the road, safe driving techniques, how to use new technology and the effect of health issues on driving are among the topics taught. After passing the course, you can get a three year auto insurance discount. After the third year, the course must be taken again.

Drive Fewer Miles

Driving mileage is one of the factors that determine your auto insurance rate. If you aren't commuting on a daily basis or going on long trips, then you drive substantially less than most drivers do. Let your insurance company know about this and you may get a discount.

Get A Safe Car With Lots Of Safety Devices

Buying a car with a high safety rating, with anti-lock brakes, airbags and anti-theft devices, can reduce your insurance rates. This is because the type of car you drive and the presence or lack of safety and anti-theft devices all factor into your risk of filing a claim in the future. This, in turn, affects your premium.

Get a Usage Based Auto Insurance Program

Some insurance companies offer usage based, or "pay as you go" insurance. In this type of insurance program, a device is installed in your car that monitors your driving habits. The information includes your daily mileage, how hard you brake, how fast you accelerate, the time of day you drive and your speed.

If you normally have safe driving habits, then a usage based program may reduce your rates. An additional benefit is that it may make you more aware of your driving habits. Some companies will allow you to view the data tracked by the device. This provides valuable feedback and gives insight into how to improve your driving.

As you can see, your auto insurance rate isn't etched into stone. Be proactive and apply as many of the above tips as you can to reduce your auto insurance premium.
